L’Alliance Française is a global organization connected by a network of local chapters that have spread French language and culture over the last 136 years.

The Spark of a Great Idea

For more than a century, a growing number of students from around the world participate in Alliance Française classes and cultural programs. This longevity has been made possible by citizens and patrons that have embraced the Alliance Française in their home countries.

1883

The National Association for French Language Propagation in the Colonies and Abroad is formed by Paul Cambon and Pierre Foncin.

1902

The Federation of Alliances Françaises USA is formed.

1919

Opening of the French Language School at 101 boulevard Raspail in Paris.

1943

General de Gaulle gives a discourse in Algeria where he reaffirms the mission of The Alliance Française.

1979

A record year with 32,000 students taking classes from Paris.

1987

Alliance Française de San Antonio is incorporated.

2019

La Fondation des Alliances Françaises celebrates 136 years.
