Looking back on the first Journée de la Francophonie

Looking back on the first Journée de la Francophonie

On Saturday, February 8th, we were thrilled to partner with the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at UTSA to bring together over 250 high school students from NEISD, NISD and St. Mary’s Hall for a day of French immersion, cultural enrichment, and competition! It was truly exceptional, and the first event of its kind in San Antonio. The San Antonio Express News provided some coverage of the event, which you can read here, and enjoy this gallery of photos from that day!

Students enjoyed participating in competitions like a Francophone country-specific video contest, sight-reading, singing, poetry reading and diction, and non-competitive activities like pétanque and a scavenger hunt inspired by the game show Fort Boyard.  Special thanks to event coordinator Isabelle Hall, French Lecturer at UTSA, with fellow area French teachers and AF de SA President Charles Matt on the Planning Committee; Stéphane Raveneau and his team at Sweet Paris Crêperie in The Shops at La Cantera for providing savory and sweet crêpes to each attendee; and our event judges and many other adult and UTSA student volunteers. We hope the experience has motivated these students to continue their study of French through the year, and we look forward to an even bigger Journée in 2021!
