AFSA offers adult classes year-round in Spring, Summer, and Fall.



Registration deadline for Summer 2025 classes is May 31st.
Registration deadline for Fall 2025 classes is August 31st.
Registration deadline for Spring 2026 classes is December 31st.

Workshops

Are you interested in learning French for the first time? Are you looking for a short (4-week), low-commitment, introduction to the basics of French? This class is intended for students who have never studied French before to gain exposure to the language. Afterward, students will be able to determine if they would like to embark upon a deeper dive, for example a 12-week class in the Fall.

i. Exploring the Pilgrimage Routes to Santiago de Compostela (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

This culture class will highlight the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela, or the “Way of St. James”, is a popular route for hikers, cyclists, and organized tour groups terminating at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (northwestern Spain), which purports to hold the remains of St. James. Classes will be comprised of some lecturing and shared texts to be read aloud by students for practice speaking. At the end of this course, students will have the inspiration and recommendations to plan their own visit to the area. Note on level: This class is suitable for A2 (Advanced Beginners) or A1.5 students. This class is not suitable for Absolute Beginners.

j. French Conversation I– Intermediate/Advanced (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

Students should have a basic understanding of the basic tenses in French: present, imparfait, and passé composé. We will have a vocab list over certain topics to prepare ourselves for each week's class. Included topics in this session will be: family, food, work, and home life.

k. French Conversation II – Intermediate/Advanced (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

Students should have a basic understanding of the basic tenses in French: present, imparfait, and passé compose. We will have a vocab list over certain topics to prepare ourselves for each week's class. Included topics in this session will be: travel, hobbies, health and holidays/celebrations.

l. French Pop Music (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

Popular music can be a great way to tap into a culture and learn applied language! If you are a student of French and like music…this is the perfect class for you! We will listen to recently released songs, discuss and translate lyrics, and talk about the themes addressed by these artists. Students will be introduced to popular French/francophone artists such as: GIMS, Vianney, Angèle, Amir, and Stromae. Students can expect to gain new vocabulary, cultural awareness, and a fun playlist to dance to. All are welcome but this course is recommended for students at an A2 - C level.

Saturdays, July 19th; 26th; August 2nd; and 9th (4-weeks) 4:30pm – 6pm

m. Prefixes/Suffixes in French – A2-B1 (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

What are prefixes and suffixes? Prefixes come before the roots of a word, while suffixes come after. For example, in English, “dis-” in “dislike” is a prefix, and “-or” in “narrator” is a suffix. They are useful to know, as they can change the meaning of the words! They can help you enrich your vocabulary and knowing them could help you decipher words.

This class will present the main prefixes and suffixes used in French, along with examples of words. We’ll also do some exercises together. This class will rely heavily on English for explanations as to ensure comprehension. The vocabulary and concepts explored, however, will be more advanced. Thus, this class is not intended for absolute or early beginners.

n. Lecture à voix haute/Reading out loud – A2-B1 (In-Person – Location TBD)

Workshops

Come practice your reading skills! One week prior to each class, you’ll receive a selection of texts per email. Choose and practice one. During class, each participant will take its turn reading a part of the text they selected, and they’ll get instant feedback. These feedbacks will be useful to all participants on how to improve their pronunciation.

For reading out loud, it’s necessary to understand the text you’re reading. It will be each participant’s job to do that work prior to the class. The main focus of this class will be pronunciation. This class will be conducted using French and English, as needed.

o. French News/Les infos en français – A2 (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

One week before each class, you’ll receive a PDF with French news, so you can read them and work on them in advance.

The objective of this class is to learn how to talk about the news and how to give your opinion. You’ll learn how to talk about a news article in French, how to summarize it. You’ll also learn the vocabulary related to the news. And also how to express your opinion. This class will be conducted using French and English, as needed.

Workshops

Each week, we’ll read together two extracts. Each participant will have to read out loud some sentences and try to figure out the overall meaning of the text, without filling in the blanks. Once the text has been read comes the fun part: each participant will take its turn at filling in the blanks. The texts chosen will vary. As an example, during the last session of this class, we had classics (Tartuffe, Le Petit Prince), but also poetry (a poem by Jacques Prévert), juvenile, crime, etc. It’s a fun way to enrich your vocabulary, while getting acquainted with new authors. This class will be conducted in French, mostly.
